PELE COWLEY RETURNS TO AG’s FOR 2021

AUSTIN, TX (August 25th, 2020) Austin Gilgronis is thrilled to announce the re-signing of Samoan international scrumhalf, Pele Cowley. Cowley is undefeated as an AG and looks to carry the momentum from the Texas Cup victory into the 2021 campaign.

AG’s head coach Sam Harris is ecstatic to have Pele back in the team, “He won! Pele is a winner, and while he only played one game he impressed everyone with his leadership as well as how quickly he learned and executed a new system.”

Cowley played all 80 minutes at scrumhalf on debut, leading the team in tackles (15) while helping the AG’s to their first win of the 2020 season against state-rival Houston Sabercats. Cowley broke the gain line on all six of his carries in the match while booting six kicks for 166 meters.

“Pele was in total control of the tempo, you could just tell in that Houston match,” says AG’s prop Mason Pedersen. “No panic at all, [Pele] can speed it up and attack the defense or slow everything down and buy us time.”

With a four-point lead and six minutes remaining in the Texas Cup match, AG’s flanker Dom Akina stole a lineout. Pele Cowley commanded the team to victory by slowing the attack to a pick-and-go crawl before booting the ball into the parking lot at full-time.

The 27-year-old has 15 caps for the Samoan national team, three of whi

ch came in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Cowley played in the Mitre 10 competition for two seasons with Counties Manukau and Waikato followed by two seasons in the Pro14 with the Cardiff Blues in 2016-2017.

Cowley is currently training with Counties Manukau this offseason and AG’s head coach Sam Harris “expect[s] Pele to be one of the form players of the competition.”
