Marcelo Torrealba Selected To Represent Chile
AUSTIN, TX (October 6th, 2020) Austin Gilgronis is delighted to announce that scrumhalf Marcelo Torrealba has been selected to represent the Chilean national team, Los Condores, in this month’s Sudamericano 4 Naciones international tournament.
Last week’s inter-squad exhibition was Torrealba’s first match action since the AG’s Texas Cup victory over Houston last March. Torrealba’s performance in the Red vs White match landed the 24-year-old scrumhalf on Chilean head coach Pablo Lemoine’s touring roster. Torrealba is one of two scrum-halves on Los Condores roster.
“It’s been a year with no rugby, so we’re lucky enough we get to compete,” says Torrealba. “I’m very excited, we’ve been training here in Chile for 7 weeks so three tough games will be really nice.”
This Thursday, Torrealba sets off to host nation Uruguay for the first of three rounds of the Sudamericano 4 Naciones. Chile starts the competition against 2019 ARC champion Argentina XV on October 17th and then round out the competition facing Uruguay (Oct. 21st) and Brazil (Oct. 25th.)
AG’s fans can stream every match by installing the Sudamerica Rugby App on Google Play or App Store.
Alongside 29 other Condores, Torrealba will be subject to sanitary protocols and preventative quarantine upon entrance into Uruguay and before being able to take the field 10 days later.
The AG’s scrumhalf is looking forward to his first opportunity at a XVs international cap, although there has yet to be a decision made by World Rugby concerning whether these matches will count as international caps. Torrealba speculates two of the matches will count as caps.
“A successful tour for me means beating Brazil, having a go at Uruguay, and showing an overall improvement in our team like the guys have done over the last year and a half,” says Torrealba.
From 2016-2019, Torrealba made several appearances for Los Condores 7s and in 2018 his lone previous appearance with the XVs national team came against the Maori All Blacks.
The Sudamericano 4 Naciones tournament was created in replacement of the Americas Rugby Championship after the traditional summer international tournament was canceled due to coronavirus.
Good luck to AGs scrumhalf Marcelo Torrealba in the Sudamericano 4 Naciones tournament and safe travels!
