AG Launches New Billboard Campaign
In an effort to promote rugby and the upcoming 2021 MLR season, the AGs featured flyhalf Kurt Morath on 13 billboards across greater Austin.
You can find Kurt’s rugged pose and charming jawline held high above I-35 and Cesar Chavez; one of the prime billboard locations in a traffic-heavy stretch of Austin highway. On the corner of South Lamar and Collier Street, Kurt is again introduced to Austin locals.
The humble leader of the AGs backline made an immediate impact last season; today he talks billboards and unfinished business in 2021.
Q: Kurt, let’s talk about the billboard. What was it like seeing yourself on billboards all over Austin?
Kurt: “To see your face up on a billboard in the U.S. was awesome, I’m always happy to jump at any opportunities like that. I think it was cooler for my kids to look up and say ‘aw yea that’s my dad up there.’ But yea when you start getting asked to do the photoshoots you feel a buzz around the team because it means the season is fast approaching.”
Q: What is the feeling around the team and organization heading into 2021?
Kurt: “There’s definitely a feeling of unfinished business, we prepped for Houston on a short week and got the win and felt like we had a lot more to give for the rest of the season ahead. Things have changed around a bit in the coaching staff and new players coming in, so I think expectations internally are pretty high.”
Q: You spent the offseason in Austin, are you starting to build a connection with the city?
Kurt: Aw yea, when the season shut down we had the opportunity to head back to New Zealand. But we knew we’d be coming back this year so we decided to ride it out here and settle in. We’re enjoying it - loving it, and we’ve made plenty of friends within rugby and outside of rugby. So yea, we’ve gotten to travel all around and do all the socially distant things to do in Austin and we’re all just loving the city.
Kurt Morath is undoubtedly one of the humble leaders of the AGs team, and as the all-time test scorer for the Tongan national team, one heck of a player. He’ll certainly be a face of the team this season and is settling into the city nicely.
He doesn’t look too bad covered in mud on a billboard, but he says he’ll ask more questions before he heads in for the next photo shoot.
